Insurance

I'm just about ready to buy that Zen Nano D and found a few good prices out there. I'm looking at the manufacturers site and they're offering an extra year's service and support - parts and labor included - for an extra $30.

Open forum for all - What are your opinions on buying extra insurance for an item of $130? Might this thing break down in 18 months and I could get another year out of it if I get it fixed by the company? Right now it doesn't seem entirely worth it, but maybe it could be...

RECKONING!

My interest in reading about politics has perked in the last week or two, seeing the possibility of a karmic backlash upon Bush. When Mier's withdrew her nomination to the Supreme Court this morning, W must've been hiding back tears of shame, for a RECKONING has been brewing quite some time.

We knew that the number of US military deaths in Iraq has been steadily climbing this whole time. We knew at some point those numbers would reach another milestone, another easily identifiable benchmark by which to gauge how things are going over there. Just so happened, that number hit this week.

The Mier's nomination has had the Republican Party in an uproar demanding proof of her stance on important constitutional issues, and they've been unwilling to just take the President's word on it. Cries of cronyism coming from every direction. And the week's not over. Tomorrow morning we're gonna have the announcement for at least one indictment of a major player in the White House. Possibly two. Possibly more?

Government will continue to run, budgets will be drawn up, bills will be passed. But Bush has now truly lost a considerable ability to make the major legislative changes the While House had planned on. And in some sick karmic-backlash-inducing way I'm really enjoying watching him squirm, seeing him embarassed, and hoping for more blood in the morning.

Firefly

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me
Take me out into the black
Tell them I ain't coming back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me
There's no place I can be
Since I found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me
--theme song

So I'm hooked on a new TV series--though it's not really new, it first aired (and then ended) in 2002. Combine space, the Old West, and a US/Chinese dominated society -- that's Firefly in a nutshell. It was born from Joss Whedon, the writer/creator of Buffy and Angel (withold your snickers, please) and only lasted for about 11 episodes. However, the movie Serenity out in theaters now picks up right where the last episode left off. Haven't seen the movie yet myself, but after being introduced to the series by a good Smithie friend, Tara, I'm hooked, enthralled, emotionally involved, and wanting more. Joss Whedon is a blaze of starlight amongst the cacaphonous drone of reality tv, homemakeover shows, and Hallmark tv movies that crowds our tv's, our silverscreens, our cable boxes. He envisions a world where the most uneducated riffraff swears in perfect Mandarin and the whores hold a higher position of respectability than the clergy. It's Star Wars without the aliens, and you can tell who the bad guys are because they all wear hats.

The women all kick ass and the ship's pilot is Steve the Pirate from Dodgeball--------what more could you want??
